In existence between 1866 and 1949, at its peak the GAR counted 409,489 members.
Since most GAR & FCL membership medals now exceed 100 years of age, the original cloth ribbons, even those few that survive intact, deteriorate each time they are touched or exposed to the elements, and are especially susceptible to fading from the sun or harsh incandescent lighting.
So, surviving membership medals in good condition are increasingly rare, especially where the original cloth ribbon is concerned.  In addition, this ribbon may not be as blue as the one on your medal, but it is identical to an original I have in my possession and the color appears accurate on the picture posted.
Through removing and properly storing your medal’s original issue ribbon, you can now wear or display your cherished keepsake while protecting its value for generations yet to come.
This high quality woven Two Sided
Reproduction
ribbon is 1 1/4” wide x 6”
in length, allowing for additional space at the top to accommodate both the GAR Eagle and Officer's Bar. This reproduction ribbon, as were all Officer Medal ribbons, is
1/4" wider
than that used for the standard membership medal. It is designed to fit the GAR Medal with the ribbon attachment bar on the OUTSIDE of the two top star points, while the standard membership medal's ribbon attachment bar is fixed between the two top star points.
However, since many members did not purchase a new medal when moving up through the local, state, and national ranks, they simply folded the ribbon to fit their original medal. (Confused? Send me your email address and I'll forward pix of both medals.)
